Your Accommodations Can Double as Your Gym on Vacation

If you’re like most people, you don’t plan to go to the gym on vacation.  After all, you may not have a membership at any of the local gyms at your destination and, of course, this is your “time off”.  That said, this doesn’t mean that you can’t make sure you’re moving around and keeping up a certain level of fitness while you’re away.

Don’t Be Too Serious About Your Gym on Vacation

Even if you want to go to the gym on vacation to a certain extent, try not to take it too seriously.  Remember that your trip is your opportunity to relax, get away and experience new things.  Still, this doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice your fitness progress.  Just try to think of it in a less structured and serious way than you would when you are at home.

For instance, instead of trying to find a gym on vacation, use your hotel room space and do some strength training moves using your body weight instead of machines.  Burpees, lunges, push-ups, and other similar moves are usually possible even in a cramped hotel room space.

Don’t forget that yoga also doesn’t require a lot of space, and you can do it in your hotel room, out on a patch of grass, or on the beach if you’re lucky enough to have one available to you.  This can be a great way to start your day or to wind down at the end of the day.

Get Outside for a Walk, Jog, Run or Hike

Your trip can offer you some great opportunities to do some workouts without ever having to go to the gym on vacation.  Simply heading out for a walk, jog or run every morning can help you greet the day with energy.  You may also find that you’ll start passing similar-minded people doing the same thing every morning.  This can make the experience even more pleasant because you’ll start recognizing some of the faces you pass and will develop a sense of community.  That feeling is a great contributor to positive mental health and stress reduction.

If you find that you benefit more from getting away from everyone and being in nature – many people do – then a hike might be better for you.  If you have a trail nearby that you can follow, all the better.  This gives you the chance to connect with nature, breathe some fresh air and set yourself up mentally for the day.  All this will keep you active without ever having to use a gym on vacation.
